Can AI help children learn languages faster? This is the question many of us ask ourselves when we see children spending years studying languages at school without ever achieving fluency.
A couple of years ago, I wrote a popular article titled Why Learning a Foreign Language in School Doesn’t Work (and How to Make It Work). In that article, I outlined the main reasons why language learning often fails—and will continue to fail—within the current educational system. I then explained how we can build upon well-established scientific insights to help children learn any language more effectively.
Traditional lectures, homework, and tests rarely lead to real communication skills. Students memorize grammar rules and vocabulary lists, but struggle to use them in actual conversations. And yet, children have a natural ability to learn languages that can be massively amplified when their environment sparks curiosity, motivation, and play. The difference lies not in talent, but in method.
In this article, I take inspiration from Alpha School, an innovative model that revolutionized education through AI. There, children spend just two hours in the morning on academics, guided by an AI tutor that guarantees AI mastery-based learning: no child moves on until reaching at least 90% proficiency, eliminating gaps and building solid foundations. cultural days with cooking, music, and dance
