Bilingual-ize Any Text with LinguaThor’s T³ – A Dream Come True?

As you know, using bilingual content is my forte! 

If you are one of the many language learners — especially beginners or intermediates — struggling to find suitable learning materials, then T³ might be the missing piece to your fluency puzzle.

Let’s take a look at what this application is all about and how I think it may (or may not) make a difference in your language learning journey. 

What is T³?

Designed by fellow polyglot and San Diegan sensation, David Allen Martin II, and programmed by his brothers, Michael and Daniel, LinguaThor’s T³ (pronounced “tee three”) is a dynamic web-based language learning tool designed to help students enhance their language skills effectively by enabling them to understand 100% of any content from Day 1 of learning. 

It sounds bold, but it may just be good enough to pull it off.

It is suitable for beginners and intermediate students who are tired of learning materials that are simple but are quickly overwhelmed by too much new vocabulary when using materials that are more advanced (like those made for native speakers).

T³ solves this common problem by offering curated bilingual content and allowing the importation of any content of interest, instantly creating a bilingual version. As the content is instantly made comprehensible, students can understand content beyond their current abilities, immediately fostering both confidence and competence in the new language.

T³ only requires an internet connection and an interest in languages to get started. Currently, T³ is available as a web app accessible from any browser on any device, with dedicated mobile apps planned for the future.

Why is T³ Unique?

There are several reasons, but I'll focus on five key aspects that make it a unique tool:

1. Enhanced Comprehensibility: By incorporating your native language directly into the learning process, T³ ensures that content is more accessible and easier to understand. This reduces cognitive load and makes the learning process more efficient and enjoyable, as you don't have to "waste time" looking up unknown words.

This exercise encourages active recall of the new language in a controlled environment, fostering consistent progress that boosts your confidence using the language.

My Experience with T³

Getting started with T³ is easy—simply create an account, choose your desired language pair, and start interacting with the content immediately.  It’s a fairly straightforward process, even for the not so tech savvy individuals out there. 

Also, you can change your target language at any time, so you're not limited to just one language combination.

T³'s interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, allowing you to focus on learning rather than managing the tool. 

You can import any material of interest and T³ will instantly provide a bilingual version, making learning your target language more accessible because it’s now 100% comprehensible.

Once you have registered and logged in, you land on the Library page which, depending on the language, may already feature some materials to use (as for Spanish-English in the screenshot above). 

Alternatively, just go to "My Content" at the top right to add your own.

"In the 'My Content' area, simply paste the target language content you want into the “Text” field and add a title for the content at the top. I recommend selecting AI translation as the translation engine for a more accurate translations. 

One very cool feature in the Pro version is that you can choose from among many regional accents for the audio generated for your content, including Castilian Spanish (pictured below), Australian English, Québécois French, Austrian German, Mexican Spanish and more!

The system takes about 1 minute to complete the process of bilingual-izing the material, and once completed, you are presented with 5 learning steps:

Read in L1:

You are shown the text translated into your native language (L1) and asked to read it to get an idea of the global meaning of the content. This step prepares your brain for what lies ahead, creating a secure foundation of familiarity and confidence and building anticipation for how these ideas will be expressed in your  target language.

Listen in L2: 

You see the text in your native language again, but this time, you listen to the audio in your target language (L2) while reading along in your L1 to start associating words with their sounds and meanings. This process is easier for languages with similar syntax, like English and Spanish, but more challenging for languages like Japanese. Nevertheless, it’s a valuable step to understand how words and phrases sound in your target language before starting to read them.

Dual Reading: 

This is the most engaging step, where your text is divided into sentences. Each word in L2 is paired with a literal (word-for-word) translation above it, the L1 sentence translation below, and the entire sentence repeated in L2. You can also play the audio. This process helps you grasp the meaning of each word in the target language and understand how the words combine in translation. You can choose to listen to individual words or the entire sentence. By actively comparing the sentence translation with the word translations, you quickly begin to intuitively understand the L2 grammar.

The Dual Reading step also features the ability to listen to the audio for individual words, as well a bilingual word look-up function called “Word Insight”:

Read in L2: 

Now that you're familiar with the text and its translation, this step involves reading the text directly in your target language without relying on translation. The idea is to test your knowledge and see how much of the L2 text you understand without the translation. You also have the option to listen to the audio as you read. If you’re unsatisfied with your comprehension, go back to Step 3 and review some more.

Active Reverse Translation (A.R.T.): 

This step involves the exercise I referred to earlier, which challenges you to translate the sentence back into your target language, using the first letters of each word as clues. This exercise helps strengthen your ability to recall the text from memory. It’s similar to the final step in my BDT method, where I translate a text back into the target language from my native language.

What Was My Experiment?

I decided to put T³ to the test by importing texts in various languages based on their "distance" from English. By "distance," I mean not only their similarity (or lack thereof) in syntax (the order of words in a sentence), but also—and perhaps more importantly—the differences with regard to their writing systems.

I selected Spanish, Russian, and Japanese as the languages for testing. 

For Spanish-English, I had no doubts about T³'s ability to create an accurate and well-formatted translation, as you can see in the screenshots above. 

The Russian-English results were equally impressive, with an excellent word-for-word translation provided.

I was initially concerned about T³'s ability to handle Japanese text, due to the lack of spacing between Japanese characters, its distinct SOV (subject-object-verb) syntax, and the complex use of particles that indicate functions like subject, topic, and object.

Two languages down, how would it handle the third? 

Despite these challenges, T³ performed impressively, though not flawlessly. The tool effectively separated Japanese text into individual words or word groups and provided fitting translations above these, aiding in intuitively understanding the unique syntax of Japanese. 

While it accurately identified most particles, occasional errors, such as mistranslating the topic marker は (wa) as 'is,' did occur but were later corrected. These minor issues did not, however, significantly affect the tool's usefulness in analyzing and translating Japanese text.

I would recommend that the developers integrate functions to romanize the Japanese text using Latin script (romaji) or add furigana (hiragana pronunciation) above kanji compounds, which are often difficult for learners to read. However, the ability to hear any word or compound directly within the tool by simply clicking on it greatly enriches the learning experience, making T³ an invaluable resource for tackling one of the world’s most intricate languages.

Beginner Learners: I typically recommend that beginners start with a core resource like a textbook with audio to establish a solid language foundation. With T³, however, they can enhance their learning by using AI tools like ChatGPT to create and import their own short texts, or import texts from other sources.
T³ transforms these into bilingual materials that learners can explore through a structured 5-step process, offering additional reinforcement and practice.
Intermediate Learners: For those at the intermediate level, engaging with podcasts or videos that include transcripts and translations is key to maximizing exposure through listening and reading.
T³ adds value by converting these materials into bilingual formats for immediate comprehension without dictionaries. In addition, T3 allows you to embed YouTube videos directly into imported video transcripts for direct listening on the T3 platform, enhancing the overall learning experience.

Ultimately, using T³ effectively for your language learning hinges on you efficiently selecting, creating, and organizing your resources. T³'s features allow you to customize your exposure and practice well beyond your current level, making it an essential tool in the vast array of language learning technologies available today.
