Use NotebookLM to Create Custom Language Learning Podcasts with AI

The world of AI has gifted us language learners another miracle: the ability to create custom podcasts for language learners at our proficiency level out of virtually any piece of text.

Finding suitable language learning material that matches your level can be one of the most significant challenges for language learners. Whether it’s books, articles, podcasts, or videos, the struggle to locate appropriate resources can be tricky.

Today, we’re introducing an AI language learning tool that promises to transform your journey: NotebookLM by Gemini.

If you have a Gmail account, you can access this free AI tool for language learning. Here’s how it works and how you can use it to personalize your language learning experience

Getting Started with NotebookLM

First, head over to the Notebook LM website.

I’ve configured my Gmail in Italian, so the interface appears in Italian, but you can view it in any language of your choice.

The platform’s goal is to help you think smarter, not harder. Learning languages with AI has never been more accessible.

Let’s explore how.

1. 1. Create a New Notebook:

      Once on the platform, click on the “New Notebook” button. You’ll have several options for uploading content: upload a PDF directly from your computer, pull documents from Google Drive, use a URL from the internet, or simply copy and paste any text you have.

      For this demonstration, I uploaded an article I wrote about learning 50,000 words in any language. 

      Notebook LM effortlessly uploaded the content and summarized the document.

   2. Generating an English Podcast:

      A standout feature of NotebookLM is its ability to create personalized podcasts. I selected an option called “English Deep Dive,” where the AI transformed the uploaded document into an engaging podcast. The result? A 10-15 minute conversation tailored to the document’s content.

      I named the podcast “The Best Way to Learn 50,000 Words” and played a short snippet to showcase the AI’s natural-sounding American English. The conversation flowed smoothly, illustrating how extensive reading builds vocabulary.

      This makes NotebookLM one of the best AI tools for language study.

Tailoring Content to Your Learning Level

One of NotebookLM’s most powerful features is its ability to customize content to your proficiency level.

Using the “Personalize” button, you can instruct the AI on the podcast’s style, difficulty level, and language.

    • • I often emphasize the importance of finding material slightly above your current level. NotebookLM allows you to create podcasts tailored to your stage. For example, I generated an English podcast at an A2 level to demonstrate how the AI adjusts content.
    • • The conversation was simpler and more accessible, ideal for learners building foundational skills. You can even specify particular vocabulary sets, like the first 1,000 most common words, making this tool essential for adaptive language learning content.

Experimenting with Multilingual Podcasts

NotebookLM isn’t limited to English. It supports multiple languages, including Italian, Spanish, French, and German.

I created a podcast entirely in Italian, instructing the AI to ensure all participants spoke only in Italian, providing an immersive listening experience.

While the voices may not sound 100% native yet, they are impressively close. Imagine having a podcast in your target language, perfectly tailored to your level and interests. AI technology in language education is truly advancing.

Expanding Your Horizons: Testing the Tool in Various Languages

Curious about the tool’s capabilities, I experimented with other languages, such as Greek and Hungarian. Although the quality isn’t as refined as for widely spoken languages, the platform shows great promise. With continuous advancements, I expect improvements across more languages soon.
