Vocabulary Flashcards: Weighing the Pros and Cons

Using vocabulary flashcards has been a staple in education for decades, helping students memorize facts and figures across various subjects. 

In the digital age, flashcards have evolved, with programs like ANKI and MosaLingua offering advanced features to enhance learning efficiency. But just how useful are flashcards for language learning? I’ve spoken about this topic in the past, but today, I’d like to offer the flashcard fanatics a way to get the most out of their memorization efforts. 

The Pros of Flashcards

Efficient Memorization

Flashcards do enhance memorization through repetition and particularly spaced repetition techniques, where information is reviewed at increasing intervals to optimize retention. Digital flashcards such as those in ANKI and MosaLingua use algorithms to present flashcards with words just before you're likely to forget them, reinforcing vocabulary at the optimal time.

Portable and Flexible

Flashcards make language learning easy, because they are portable (especially if we’re talking about digital ones) allowing you to study anytime and anywhere. Using flashcards for vocabulary during your commute or in line at the grocery store makes learning more convenient than having to sit down at a desk and open up a 10lb grammar book. 

Focused Learning

Flashcards with words, images and sounds enable targeted learning, allowing you to concentrate on specific words or phrases by relying on multiple senses and thus creating a stronger bond between you and your target language.. This focused approach helps reinforce difficult concepts into bite-sized pieces and can help with the mastery of certain language elements. 

Active Recall

No, this is not the sequel to Arnold’s hit sci-fi movie Total Recall. Active recall is a powerful learning process where you actively retrieve information from memory. Regularly testing yourself with vocabulary flashcards engages active recall, enhancing long-term retention. Flashcards with sentences are a much better context because they provide context, improving your comprehension and usage of a word or phrase. 

The Cons of Flashcards

Lack of Context

As I just mentioned, if you’re going to learn a language word-by-word and bit-by-bit without having context, you’re in for a world of hurt. Poorly made vocabulary flashcards often present information in isolation, hindering understanding of how words and phrases are used in real-life contexts. Without context, it's challenging to grasp the nuances and variations of language usage. Flashcards with images and sentences can help but should be combined with other methods for contextual learning.

Overemphasis on Memorization

While memorizing and recalling vocabulary is crucial to mastering a language, vocabulary flashcards and language learning flashcards often focus on rote learning, emphasizing memorization over comprehension and practical use. This makes each card you’re learning feel like a lifeless piece of information that you’re uploading into your brain. Using flashcards to learn a language is most effective when supplemented with activities that promote understanding and contextual application.

Repetition and Boredom

The tag team duo that has defeated many language learners throughout the years. There’s a reason why using flashcards to learn languages isn’t recommended by most avid language learners. Think of it like this, would you rather read a new book in your target language or review 50 terms from the past week?  Continuously reviewing the same cards can and will become monotonous, making it difficult to stay motivated. Incorporating variety and engaging activities is crucial to maintaining interest.

Neglects Other Skills

Relying solely on flashcards can result in neglecting other important language skills such as listening, speaking, and writing. To achieve fluency, it's crucial to develop a well-rounded skill set that includes all aspects of language learning. Maybe there’s that rare individual who mastered a language via flashcards, but out of all the polyglots I’ve met throughout the years, none of them have recommended relying on language learning flashcards.

Those are the primary pros and cons of using flashcards.  I would argue that the time it takes to create flashcards outweighs the benefits of memorizing a word or two.  That time you spent creating a flashcard or two, could have been better spent reading and listening to your target language. 

Now, with that being said, there has been a flashcard fire spreading throughout the language learning community thanks to a well known app called ANKI. 

ANKI in a Nutshell

ANKI is a powerful spaced repetition software designed to help users efficiently memorize information through digital flashcards. It's highly customizable and supports multimedia, making it versatile for language learners.

The Good

- Efficiency: ANKI optimizes the time spent on review, focusing on items you're about to forget, making study sessions productive.

- Customization: Create personalized vocabulary flashcards tailored to your learning needs, including flashcards with sentences, images, and audio.

- Multimedia Support: Integrate audio, images and videos to enhance learning by providing multiple ways to engage with the material.

- Accessibility: Available on multiple platforms, ANKI allows you to study anytime, anywhere.

The Bad

- Steep Learning Curve: ANKI's interface can be complex for beginners, requiring time to learn effectively. It’s not as user friendly as other language learning apps. 

- Over-Reliance on Rote Memorization: Learning words in isolation without context can hinder practical language use. 

- Monotony: Repetition can and will become tedious, leading to burnout if not balanced with other learning methods.

Therefore, as much as you may think ANKI is the answer to your language learning prayers, I believe there are better options when it comes to using digital flashcards.  If you absolutely must use flashcards for language learning, then I highly recommend using ones that enable you to listen to content on the go. 

Enter MosaLingua

MosaLingua is ANKI on steroids.  It’s a comprehensive app that gives you a well rounded language learning experience compared to other flashcard apps out there.  The core of MosaLingua’s content is delivered via dialogues from which you can create flashcards and re-listen to while doing other activities. 

Here’s a look at the pros and cons of MosaLingua compared to ANKI.

Pros

2. Focus on Listening Comprehension: The app emphasizes learning useful vocabulary and phrases taken in context from their library of dialogues. 
3. Simpler Interface: MosaLingua uses a spaced repetition system just like ANKI, but it makes it a lot easier for you, the user, to make vocabulary and language learning flashcards without wasting time. 
4. Customizable Learning: Along with their content, you have special access to their tutors and language coaches.  Therefore, you can practice each of the major language skills via one resource. 

Cons

1. Limited Grammar Focus: While MosaLingua is excellent for vocabulary acquisition, it may not offer as comprehensive a grammar instruction as some learners might need.
2. Repetitive Learning Style: Again, much like ANKI, the focus on repetition might feel monotonous to some users, especially those who prefer more interactive or varied learning activities.
3. Subscription Costs: While MosaLingua offers a lot of content, it operates on a subscription model, which might be a drawback for those looking for free resources or a one-time purchase such as ANKI. 

The Final Verdict on Flashcards

I have to be honest, I’m still not a big fan of flashcards, but I see the value they can provide for other people. 

Language learning flashcards can be a powerful tool for vocabulary building when used appropriately and in combination with other methods that provide context and practical usage. 

Whether you choose traditional handwritten vocabulary flashcards, ANKI, or a comprehensive app like MosaLingua, the key is to balance memorization with context and practical application.
